How long to Air Fry Tri Tip

The rule of thumb is that you want to cook your roast for 10-12 minutes per pound. So for a 3 pound tri tip roast, you should plan to cook it for 30-36 minutes total.

You can also use an Instant Read Thermometer to help you cook the steak to your desired level of doneness.

For medium rare, you want the internal temperature of the roast to reach 130 degrees F. For medium, air fry the roast until it reaches 140 degrees F.

If you prefer medium-well, wait until the internal temperature reaches 150 degrees F.

Tips for Cooking Tri Tip in a Air Fryer

  • Let the roast marinate for at least a few hours if possible. This will allow the beef to soak up all those amazing flavors!
  • Give the roast 30 minutes to come to room temperature before cooking. You don’t want the steak to be completely cold going into the air fryer.
  • Always preheat the air fryer. This will give you the most even cooking results.
  • For medium rare, cook the tri tip in the air fryer for about 30 minutes or until it reaches an internal temperature of 130 degrees F.
  • Let the roast rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing. This will allow the meat to cool, which relaxes the fibers so they can reabsorb their juices. Otherwise, when you slice into the roast, all the juices will run out and the meat will be dry.

How do you cook tri-tip so it’s tender?

For the tenderest tri-tip, let it warm to room temperature for about 30 minutes before air-frying it. This simple trick changes the game!
Marinating the tri tip also helps break down the meat for a more tender bite.

What temp is tri-tip most tender?

I recommend cooking air fryer tri tip medium rare, which means the internal temperature reaches 130 degrees F. That’s when the meat will melt in your mouth!

Why is my tri-tip so tough?

If your tri tip in the air fryer turned out tough, it’s usually because it went straight from the fridge to the air fryer, it’s overcooked, or it didn’t get to rest after cooking.

  1. Nice recipe…..but pet peeve….. you give preheat 400° and cook time! But really, no temperature setting for the airfryer? I had to go to a totally different site to find the temperature setting!!!

    • Hi Judie, I understand your frustration. Using an air fryer with a customizable temperature function ensures more accurate results, especially when sharing recipes. Since Low, Medium, and High settings can vary between air fryer models, specifying an exact temperature helps achieve consistent results for everyone. I appreciate your understanding and hope this helps clarify. Unless noted otherwise, every air fryer recipe on my site cooks at the same temperature it preheats at, just as you would with your oven.
