How to make Air Fryer Artichokes
A full printable version of this recipe with ingredient measurements is available at the bottom of this post.
STEP ONE: Preheat your air fryer to 340 degrees F. Rinse the artichokes and trim the stems to remove the tough outer leaves. Cut the whole artichokes in half lengthwise and remove the fuzzy choke (it’s inedible) using a spoon.
STEP TWO: Pour the lemon juice over the cut sides of the artichoke. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper to taste. Flip them and repeat on the leafy side.
STEP THREE: Place the artichokes cut side down in your air fryer and leave them to fry for 12 minutes. Open the air fryer, flip the artichokes, and then fry them for 4 more minutes (for a total of 16 minutes).
STEP FOUR: When they’re done, take the artichokes out of the air fryer. Serve with lemon wedges and your favorite dipping sauce!
How to Pick the Best Artichoke
When choosing your artichokes, it’s important to test each one in your hand. Opt for whole artichokes that are on the heavier side and that have a solid feel. The heavier the artichoke, the fresher it is. The leaves should be thick and firmly closed with a dark green hue.
Another tip? Rub the artichoke leaves together. If they squeak, it’s a good sign! That means the artichoke is fresh.
Can You Cook a Whole Artichoke in the Air Fryer?
Yes, you can cook a whole artichoke in the air fryer! Place the artichoke stem down in a bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Gently separate the leaves of the whole artichoke, and make a hole in the center with a knife.
Drizzle more oil, and place a garlic clove at the center of each artichoke. Season with salt and pepper and cook the artichoke in the air fryer for 20 minutes at 360 degrees F.
How to Eat Artichokes
You can eat artichokes hot or cold. Pull the leaves off the whole artichoke one by one and dip the base into your choice of dipping sauce. The base of the artichoke leaf is called the “meaty” section and that is the only edible part of the outer leaves.
Once you’ve eaten all of the leaves, you can scoop out the heart which is completely edible! Watch out for the inner, fuzzy “choke” which should be removed and discarded.
Dip Ideas to Serve with the Artichokes
There are several different dip options for fried artichokes. Artichokes go well with dairy, so you could make a dip out of melted butter or any type of cheese. Cream cheese, goat cheese, sour cream, and feta-based sauces are all great ideas.
Air fryer artichokes also taste good with herbs like parsley, thyme, and basil. Try to incorporate these spices in your dip! Some people even enjoy eating artichokes with mayonnaise or hollandaise sauce.
