My family absolutely loves this homemade blue cheese dressing recipe. They use it on everything from salads to buffalo wings, pizza, french fries, and everything in-between. We rarely end up with leftovers, and I often need to make a double batch.

How to Make Blue Cheese Dressing

STEP ONE: Place buttermilk and about 1-2 ounces of blue cheese in a medium bowl. Use a fork to break up the large crumbles. Don’t worry about making the mixture completely smooth.

STEP TWO:  In the same bowl, add in the sour cream, lemon juice, mayonnaise, parsley, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.

STEP THREE: If desired, set aside a tablespoon of blue cheese for a final garnish on top. Fold in the remaining crumbles to the dressing mixture. Mix and let sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

How Can I Make my Blue Cheese Dressing Thinner?

This recipe tends to come out quite thick, which I prefer for dipping purposes. However, if you prefer a thinner dressing, the process is easy. 

Simply add additional buttermilk, one teaspoon at a time. For a more acidic dressing, try adding lemon juice or even white vinegar, also one teaspoon at a time.

How is Blue Cheese Dressing Different from Ranch?

Have you ever wondered what the difference between ranch dressing and blue cheese dressing is? 

These two American staples share some important similarities. For example, they both start with a creamy base made of buttermilk, mayonnaise, and sour cream and include salt, pepper, and parsley.

The two diverge when it comes to the star players, and ranch dressing emphasizes the spices with more pepper, parsley, garlic, and onion.  Blue cheese dressing, on the other hand, highlights that distinctively pungent, salty, and sharp cheese we know and love. You guessed it — blue cheese!

What is the Best Blue Cheese to Use for this Dressing Recipe?

When choosing your cheese, go for the full-fat version for the richest flavor. I recommend buying a full wedge of high-quality blue cheese. That way, you can break up the cheese yourself and customize the size of your crumbles. 

There are many different varieties of blue cheese to choose from as well. They vary in pungency, texture, and sharpness, so the decision depends on your preference. Some of my favorite options include:

How Do I Store Leftover Blue Cheese Dressing?

As I mentioned before, keeping this yummy dressing in my house for very long is impossible, so I don’t usually have leftovers. 

However, I occasionally want to make a batch or two in advance — especially for get-togethers. 

Storage is simple and easy. It can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 7 days.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces blue cheese crumbles divided
  • 2 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon parsley
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • In a medium bowl, place about 1-2 oz of blue cheese crumbles along with the buttermilk. Use a fork to smush the blue cheese crumbles. It doesn’t have to be completely smooth, just so they are not large crumbles. 
  • Add in the mayonnaise, sour cream, lemon juice, parsley, salt and pepper to the bowl and stir to combine. 
  • *Optional* Reserve a tablespoon of blue cheese crumbs to top your dressing with as additional garnish.  Fold in the remaining blue cheese crumbles. Refrigerate and allow to sit for at least 30 minutes.

Notes

How to make dressing thinner:

If you would like your dressing a little thinner, then add buttermilk a teaspoon at a time. If you would like your dressing more acidic than instead of additional buttermilk, you can add additional lemon juice or even white vinegar a teaspoon at a time.
