My Husband’s Favorite Chicken Wrap

Every time my husband Ben goes to a restaurant for lunch, he gets a crispy fried buffalo chicken wrap. Every. Single. Time. So, of course, I had to come up with a homemade version that rivaled his usual order.

I got the idea when I had some leftover air fryer chicken tenders from dinner the night before. I coated them in buffalo sauce, then added them to a tortilla with lettuce and blue cheese crumbles before wrapping it all up.

My husband said it was better than any buffalo chicken wrap he’d ever gotten at a restaurant! Since then, I’ve tried making my wrap with all different kinds of leftover chicken, and it’s a serious crowd pleaser every time.

Buffalo Chicken Wraps Ingredients

  • Chicken – Leftovers chicken tenders are my usual go to, but I’ve also used grilled chicken breasts, shredded grilled chicken, and rotisserie chicken
  • Buffalo sauce – I recommend using my homemade buffalo sauce, but store-bought is great too
  • Tortillas – Soft flour tortillas that may be labeled burrito-size tortillas are perfect for wraps
  • Blue cheese – I use blue cheese dressing or crumbles depending on what I have on hand, but the slight winner for me is chunky blue cheese dressing
  • Shredded lettuce – I usually use ice berg lettuce to give the wrap a little crunch, but romaine lettuce works great too
  • Shredded cheddar – Optional but adds some extra flavor

How to make a Buffalo Chicken Wrap

STEP ONE: Cut the cooked chicken tenders into bite-sized pieces.

STEP TWO: Place the chicken in a bowl and coat them with the buffalo hot sauce on both sides until fully coated.

STEP THREE: Place the tortillas on a flat surface and put 1/4 of the buffalo chicken, blue cheese, lettuce, and cheddar cheese, if using, into each of the tortillas.

STEP FOUR: Fold and wrap each tortilla up tightly and secure them with toothpicks, if desired.

Tips and tricks for the best buffalo chicken wraps

  • Use homemade buffalo sauce. Honestly, my buffalo sauce recipe is better than anything that can be bought in a store, and it’s super easy to make. This wrap can only be as good as the sauce.
  • Break up the chicken into bite-sized pieces. I like how the smaller pieces pick up more of the buffalo sauce for goodness in every bite.
  • Layer the shredded lettuce on the bottom. I do this so the lettuce absorbs any extra buffalo sauce and keeps the tortilla from getting soggy. This trick works great when I’m making them for next day lunches at work or for school.
  • Add shredded cheddar cheese for some added cheesiness. I love how the cheddar flavor pairs with the spicy chicken and it adds even more protein to the wrap.
  • Secure the wrap with a toothpick. This makes them easy to stack when I’m making several for a game day spread.

Buffalo Chicken Wrap Recipe Variations and substitutions

  • Trying cooking the chicken wrap in the air fryer. I preheat my air fryer to 350 degrees F, spritz the wraps with a bit of oil using an EVO Oil Sprayer, and cook them for 5-8 minutes, turning halfway through. It can also be heated in a large skillet or pan on medium-high heat.
  • Replace the blue cheese dressing with ranch dressing. I always make a few with ranch when I’m feeding a group since I know not everyone likes blue cheese. Blue cheese and buffalo sauce are true to Buffalo, though.
  • Adjust the amount of buffalo sauce according to spice tolerance. I also have a mild buffalo sauce for more sensitive palettes!
  • I sometimes throw in veggies like diced celery, carrots, spinach, red onions, or peppers for extra crunch and flavor.
  • Add diced tomatoes for a burst of fresh flavor. This is my husband’s favorite version!

What to serve with a Chicken Wrap

For a perfect game day spread, I love serving spicy chicken wraps alongside air fryer French fries, air fryer potato chips, and jalapeño poppers in the oven.

For super quick snacks, I also like pairing chicken wraps with pizza rolls in the air fryer, taquitos in the air fryer, and crispy tater tots in the air fryer!

The best sauces to use in this Spicy Chicken Wrap

I almost always make my super easy homemade buffalo sauce for this recipe! It’s so good and stays fresh for 30 days in the fridge. I also have a mild buffalo sauce version for anyone who doesn’t like too much spice.

If I’m using store-bought, my favorite brand is Original Anchor Bar Buffalo Wing Sauce. That’s 100% straight from local Buffalo!

Buffalo Chicken Wrap FAQs

Is a wrap healthy compared to bread?

I think this all depends on the ingredients. I look for tortillas without trans fats and sometimes opt for whole-grain wraps.

A single tortilla can have similar calories compared to two pieces of bread, but I fill my wraps with way more ingredients than a sandwich, so a single wrap is much more satisfying. With a sandwich, I usually find myself reaching for a second one.

What types of leftover chicken can I use for buffalo chicken wraps?

Crispy or breaded chicken strips are my favorite, but I’ve tried this buffalo chicken wrap recipe with all kinds of leftover chicken, and all have been delicious! Some of my go-tos are air fryer chicken tenders, frozen chicken tenders, chicken strips, air fried grilled chicken, rotisserie chicken, air fryer whole chicken, and shredded chicken.

How should I store leftovers?

I store my leftover buffalo chicken wraps tightly in foil or in an airtight container. Cooked chicken will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days, so I always factor in when the chicken was first cooked into my storage time for these wraps.

How do I keep this chicken wrap from being too spicy?

If I’m making buffalo wraps for anyone with a lower spice tolerance, I’ll use mild buffalo sauce. I also mix a little Greek yogurt or sour cream into the dressing to help balance out the heat.

Notes

  • The wrap can only be as good as the buffalo sauce, so make some homemade sauce if you can. If you need to use store bought, use one you know you love.
  • Smaller pieces of chicken will pick up more of the buffalo sauce in every bite.
  • Layer the shredded lettuce on the bottom so the lettuce absorbs any extra buffalo sauce and keeps the tortilla from getting soggy.
  • Secure the wrap with a toothpick. This makes them easy to stack and store.
  • Store leftover buffalo chicken wraps tightly in foil or in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Cooked chicken will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days, so always factor in when the chicken was first cooked into the storage time.
